When the Ground Shook, We Chose to Stand with Our People

On 28 March 2025, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar at around 12:50 PM local time. Its epicentre, near the cities of Mandalay and Sagaing, sent violent tremors across the country and beyond, reaching as far as Thailand and China. In mere minutes, lives were upended. Buildings crumbled. Bridges fell. Families ran into the streets, clutching each other amid the chaos.

The devastation was swift and widespread. Over 3,000 lives have been lost. Thousands more are injured or missing. Homes and critical infrastructure such as airports, schools, historical landmarks, and roads lie in ruins. Many families are still sleeping in open spaces, too fearful to return indoors.

In the face of this immense tragedy, our hearts are with the people of Myanmar. Especially, with our colleagues, their families, and the communities we call home.

People First, Always

At EDOTCO, our people are the heartbeat of everything we do. And when the ground shook, our first thoughts were of them.

The tremors reached our Kantharyar Office in Yangon. Our Engineering & Operations team acted quickly to lead a safe evacuation from the 17th floor. A roll call confirmed everyone was safe and accounted for. Across our regional offices, calls were made (many through disrupted lines) to check on our teams in Mandalay, Sagaing, Taunggyi, and beyond. The good news: all our colleagues are safe.

But safety isn't just about surviving the quake. Some of our teammates in the North and West regions lost their homes. Some are staying in makeshift shelters. Some are still dealing with the fear of aftershocks that come, unannounced, day after day.

To support them, we moved quickly to approve an emergency relief fund for our affected staff. Our local teams began distributing essentials such as clean water, food packs, tents, flashlights, gas stoves, and medical supplies to those most affected. It wasn’t always easy — roads were broken, phone lines were down. But our people found a way, because that’s what communities do when they care for one another.

When Connectivity Becomes a Lifeline

In moments like this, connectivity isn't about business. It's about belonging. It's about hearing your loved one’s voice again. It's about getting the information you need when your world has changed overnight.

As the 6th largest tower company in the world, we have over 2,200 sites across Myanmar and nearly half of them were in areas directly impacted by the earthquake. Still, our engineers showed up. They inspected damaged sites. They navigated fallen bridges and unstable roads. They worked alongside emergency responders and local partners.

Within just three to four days, core mobile services were stabilised in key affected areas. This restoration allowed rescue coordination to resume, families to reconnect, and emergency responders to access the digital tools they needed.

We’re proud of that. But more importantly, we’re grateful to our teams who made it happen, despite everything.

Ongoing Support and Care

We are still checking in on every employee and gathering details on damaged homes, making sure no one falls through the cracks. Our Central and South Region teams are safe with no reported losses, while our North and West Region colleagues continue to receive support where it’s needed most.

Across all regions, we’re being careful. Safety briefings are ongoing. Our work-from-home policy remains active. And we’ve made sure our customers are informed and supported, even as our teams rebuild what’s been broken. We also extended support to nearby communities where possible, reflecting our belief that digital infrastructure must serve people, especially in their hardest moments.

“Our thoughts are with each of you, your families, and your communities during this deeply unsettling time. We are doing everything we can to ensure your safety and well-being. We are a team, and we stand together—especially in moments like these.”
— Adlan Tajudin, Group CEO, EDOTCO Group

In the coming weeks, much will still be uncertain. But what remains steady is our commitment to our people, to our customers, and to the communities we serve. To our colleagues in Myanmar: you are not alone. We see you. We stand with you. And together, we will rebuild stronger than before.
