Over 50 EDOTCO Rangers recently gathered at Kuala Selangor Nature Park for the Festival of Wings (Pesta Sayap), an annual environmental celebration organised by the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS). The initiative builds upon EDOTCO’s ongoing collaboration with MNS, reflecting their shared mission to promote environmental awareness and protect Malaysia’s rich biodiversity.

Protecting Malaysia’s Coastal Biodiversity

Held in one of Malaysia’s most important wetland reserves, Pesta Sayap celebrates the annual return of migratory birds and the country’s vibrant biodiversity. The event serves as a platform for communities, corporates, and conservationists to unite in preserving natural habitats through education and hands-on environmental action. Most importantly, it raises awareness of the need to protect local species such as the Crested Serpent Eagle, herons, and egrets while nurturing the coastal ecosystems that sustain them.

During the programme, participants planted mangrove seeds (Rhizophora apiculata, or red mangrove) along the shoreline. These plants help prevent erosion, mitigate flood risks, and serve as natural barriers against waste and tidal surges. Beyond strengthening the coastal ecosystem, they also help protect marine life from pollution caused by human activity, a small yet meaningful step towards safeguarding Malaysia’s biodiversity.

EDOTCO Rangers also had the opportunity to embark on an insightful exploration of the park’s flora and fauna with guidance from MNS, observing how each species contributes to the balance of the coastal ecosystem.

During the event, Rangers were fortunate to spot a Crested Serpent Eagle soaring high above the skies of Kuala Selangor. This majestic bird, known for its distinctive call and powerful wingspan, is one of the protected raptor species that inhabit the area, symbolising the delicate balance of Malaysia’s natural heritage.

A Day with Nature: Learning from the Sky

One of the highlights of the day came when EDOTCO Rangers climbed an observation tower of around 30 metres high to take in a breathtaking view of the Kuala Selangor landscape and its diverse seabird species. From above, participants were able to appreciate nature’s beauty up close while learning about the scientific and ecological significance of each bird, an experience that blended discovery, adventure, and appreciation for the environment.

“This program reminded me how essential it is to care for the environment beyond business growth. Without a thriving ecosystem, we wouldn’t be able to reach where we are today and I’m glad to be part of this activity.” – Aydin Hilmi, EDOTCO Ranger

The reflection perfectly captured the spirit of the event, showing how meaningful experiences in nature can inspire a deeper sense of responsibility towards the environment and the communities that depend on it.
