From March 21st to 26th, EDOTCO embarked on a heartfelt Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, partnering with Generating Opportunities for Learning Disabilities (GOLD) to participate in the Kindness Cookies project.

This collaboration was more than just an opportunity to give back- it was a step toward fostering inclusion, creating meaningful experiences, and recognizing the incredible potential of individuals with learning disabilities.

A Partnership Rooted in Inclusion and Empowerment

This wasn’t the first time EDOTCO and GOLD joined hands. Over the years, the partnership has blossomed into something truly special. From celebrating Autism Awareness Day in 2024 to spreading festive cheer during Deepavali and Christmas, EDOTCO has remained committed to supporting GOLD’s mission. The support goes beyond events too- EDOTCO regularly purchases cookies from GOLD on a monthly basis, distributing them among employees as a sweet reminder of the power of inclusive support.

At the heart of GOLD is a vision to create a society where individuals with learning disabilities are empowered, independent, and given equal opportunities to thrive. Founded by Puan Juairiah Johari, GOLD was built on the principle that every individual, regardless of their challenges, deserves the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to their community. As a former primary school teacher, Puan Juairiah’s journey into special education began with an uncertain but determined step forward, driven by a deep commitment to making a difference.

A Teacher’s Leap of Faith

When Juairiah was first elected to pilot a new curriculum for children with special needs, she was hesitant. The idea of stepping into unfamiliar territory was daunting, and she wasn’t sure if she was equipped for the task. But with encouragement from her husband, who reminded her that by opening her heart to the children and embracing the journey of learning, she would gain just as much in return, she took the plunge. What she encountered in her first classroom was a group of children struggling to navigate the world, lacking the necessary social cues to interact comfortably with others. It was a challenge unlike anything she had faced before.

Determined to make a difference, Juairiah devoted herself to reshaping the curriculum to better suit the needs of these children. She recognized that academic success wasn’t the only goal- these students needed practical skills, confidence, and structured support to help them transition into adulthood. What began as an uncertain journey evolved into a passionate commitment to providing opportunities for individuals with learning disabilities, leading to the foundation of GOLD.

A Small but Mighty Community

Today, GOLD operates with a close-knit community of about 10 to 15 special needs adults, each of whom plays an active role in their daily operations. The members are categorized based on their skillsets and abilities, as GOLD recruits individuals with various learning disabilities, including Williams Syndrome, Down Syndrome, and Autism. Since each member possesses different levels of fine motor skills and cognitive function, their roles are tailored to their strengths.

Among them is Samantha, one of GOLD’s members, whose infectious energy and warmth embody the spirit of the initiative. Samantha is among the few with excellent motor and cognitive skills, allowing her to take on more intricate tasks in the kitchen. She finds joy in meeting new people, especially the volunteers who visit GOLD. "I love it when new people come to help,” She says with a smile. "I get to meet so many different people, make new friends, and share laughs while we bake together."

For Samantha’s mother, Lauren, seeing her daughter thrive in an environment that nurtures her strengths has been deeply moving. “It’s incredibly inspiring to watch her grow in confidence, take on responsibilities, and develop a real sense of teamwork. She’s not just learning skills- she’s finding her place in a community that values her,” she shared.

The process of baking and cooking isn’t just about preparing food; for Samantha and her peers, it’s a way to stay active, hone new skills, and be part of something bigger than themselves.

Kindness Cookies: More Than Just a Treat

The Kindness Cookies initiative wasn’t simply about baking- it was about connection, empowerment, and understanding. Under the guidance of GOLD members, EDOTCO volunteers took part in shaping, baking, and packing the cookies, immersing themselves in an experience that was both rewarding and eye-opening. Working alongside GOLD members, they gained a deeper appreciation for the effort and dedication that goes into each cookie and the valuable skills these individuals bring to the table. “It’s fun and exciting volunteering,” shared Nur Zaireen, Analyst for Finance Control and Statutory Reporting. “It’s something out of office and it’s toward a cause I personally really believe in.”

Carmen Cheo, a Mergers and Acquisitions Specialist added, “When given the right tools, people can achieve incredible things. And what GOLD is doing is just that- providing tools, space, and support to shine.”

Shasha Athira, the CSR Project Lead, also emphasized the meaningful partnership, saying, “We've had the privilege of partnering with GOLD for the past three years. Specifically, during festive seasons, our volunteers really look forward to spending time with the amazing young adults at GOLD- it's an experience that leaves a lasting impression.”

She added, “For some of our volunteers, it’s also deeply personal. Seeing the capabilities and happiness of the participants has given them renewed hope- a sense that their own children, too, can thrive with the right care and community. This collaboration continues to be one of the most meaningful parts of our volunteer journey.”

The session provided insight into the daily operations at GOLD, offering a closer look at the dedication of its members, the support of their families, and the leadership of co-founders. Volunteers, GOLD members, and their staff- many of whom are parents of the members- came together to share their experiences, reinforcing the importance of creating inclusive opportunities for individuals with learning disabilities.

Empowered by Connection

Behind the scenes, it’s not just people and flour that keep GOLD running- it’s digital connectivity. In recent years, GOLD has expanded into e-commerce, now allowing customers to place cookie orders online through their dedicated platform. This digital leap has significantly boosted their reach and income, enabling more stable, consistent support for members.

Social media, particularly Instagram, has also played a vital role in promoting their products and telling their story. With vibrant posts featuring behind-the-scenes baking moments and heartwarming member spotlights, GOLD’s growing online presence helps drive awareness and sales.

Even for logistics, tech lends a helping hand. One of GOLD’s members- an autistic young man entrusted with delivery duties- uses the Waze app to navigate routes efficiently and independently. With this level of autonomy, he feels more responsible and empowered, embracing his role in ensuring each delivery arrives safely and on time.

At its core, this initiative highlighted the importance of meaningful engagement and inclusivity. It reinforced the idea that when given the right support, individuals with learning disabilities can not only succeed but also inspire those around them.

A Month That Matters

As the world marks Autism Awareness Month this April, EDOTCO’s collaboration with GOLD serves as a powerful reminder that inclusion is not a one-off campaign- it’s a continuous commitment.

The Kindness Cookies initiative may have lasted just a week, but its impact reaches far beyond flour-dusted aprons and trays of sweet treats. It’s a testament to what happens when corporations, communities, and technology come together to uplift lives and build a more inclusive world.

Because in the end, kindness isn’t just about giving- it’s about believing that everyone deserves the chance to shine.
