Strengthens Malaysia’s position as a digital hub, offering enhanced connectivity and digital experience as the nation assumes the ASEAN Chairmanship

Kuala Lumpur, January 27, 2025 – Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB), Malaysia’s 5G network provider, and EDOTCO Group, the national digital infrastructure provider, have successfully completed the installation of 5G In-Building Solutions (IBS) at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and KLIA2. This milestone marks a significant step in enhancing connectivity and improving the digital experience for travellers and visitors at these key transportation hubs as Malaysia begins its ASEAN Chairmanship this year.

The installation, completed within two months, was activated on Friday at a handover ceremony between DNB, EDOTCO Group, and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad. DNB Chief Executive Officer Datuk Azman Ismail emphasised the company’s commitment to expanding 5G infrastructure across strategic, commercial, and government facilities. The installation of 5G IBS at KLIA and KLIA2 is part of DNB's ongoing efforts to provide superior indoor connectivity in high-footfall areas across strategic and commercial buildings. This is in addition to the 5G outdoor sites that already cover more than 82 percent of populated areas nationwide.

Datuk Azman said, “Through collaboration with Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) and building owners, DNB’s key focus this year is to enhance 5G indoor coverage and connectivity. The installation at KLIA and KLIA2 is a significant milestone, with plans to extend 5G IBS to other key locations.”

DNB has installed 5G IBS at a total of 73 sites, including strategic and government facilities such as Senai International Airport, Penang International Airport, Setia Spice Arena, Setia Spice Convention Centre, KOMTAR, KL Sentral, Institut Jantung Negara (IJN), PPUM, PPUKM, Hospital Putrajaya, Hospital Selayang, Hospital Sg Buloh, Hospital Shah Alam, and various Urban Transformation Centres (UTCs).

EDOTCO is Malaysia Airports' preferred partner in deploying telecommunications infrastructure within the 10km x 10km radius of the KLIA area. As of January 2025, EDOTCO has successfully delivered 52 5G inbuilding connectivity solutions across Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, along with nine outdoor 5G poles, enhancing comprehensive connectivity throughout the vicinity.

Adlan Tajudin, Group Chief Executive Officer of EDOTCO, said, “Our commitment to providing innovative, sustainable infrastructure augurs well with Malaysia’s vision of becoming a digital hub. The activation of 5G IBS at KLIA and KLIA2 marks another significant step forward in our journey, and together, we are paving the way for seamless, reliable connectivity that supports both economic growth and an enhanced user experience.”

VijayKumar Dayinde, Chief Information Officer of Malaysia Airports, said, “The integration of 5G infrastructure in KLIA is a transformative upgrade that enhances operational efficiency and passenger convenience by leveraging 5G’s speed, low latency, and high data capacity. It supports IoT devices, smart sensors, and advanced digital solutions, enabling us to meet evolving demands while prioritising efficiency, satisfaction, and resilience.”

5G IBS allows users to enjoy faster and more reliable connectivity in public and commercial buildings, ensuring a seamless digital experience. This indoor coverage also enables businesses and enterprises to implement new 5G use cases to improve operational efficiency and deliver better value to their customers.

Examples of these 5G use cases were showcased at the handover ceremony, including an autonomous buggy by local technology developer eMooVit and CelcomDigi’s use of a 5G-AI powered autonomous last-mile delivery robot. When deployed at airports, these solutions are capable of ensuring safe, efficient, and timely delivery of goods or luggage, thus reducing costs and reliance on manual labour, improving customer experience with contactless and dependable logistics, while promoting sustainability from lower carbon emissions.

The implementation of 5G IBS at key entry points supports the government’s vision of transforming Malaysia into a digital hub while enhancing connectivity for visitors, aligning with the nation’s role as ASEAN Chair in 2025.
