edotco, Global Peace Mission Malaysia initiate environmental sustainability project

  • Project educates and engages communities in five states on environmental conservation action
  • 120 bags of recyclable waste collected on the first day of the project in Selangor

Kuala Lumpur, 18 October 2021 – edotco Malaysia (edotco) and Global Peace Mission Malaysia (GPM) have initiated the Love Initiative for Earth (LIFE) project to help conserve natural ecosystem and promote environmental sustainability. The LIFE project covering five states in Malaysia targets to collect up to 70 tonnes of recyclable waste and regreen the surrounding areas.

On the first day of the LIFE project in Selangor, 120 bags of recyclable waste was collected by members of Kampung Sungai Kajang in Tanjung Karang. At the same time, 20 bucida trees were also planted at the site of one of the nation’s earliest palm sugar processing plant.

The two-month project mobilises local communities to take action to improve their surroundings for the betterment of their wellbeing and that of the environment.

Starting with an awareness phase to educate communities on environmental conservation and drive action leading into phase two which culminates in a collection day at each location. To translate awareness into action, phase two engages the communities via an exchange programme that rewards local communities for their effort.

To ease the process, drive-through counters will be opened for residents to send in the collected recyclable waste. In return, they can redeem necessities for their daily consumption. Residents stand to receive basic food necessities based on the quantity and category of recyclable waste they bring in. This unique exchange of recycle waste for goods
offer items such as rice, milk, cooking oil, flour, sugar and salt.

Through this programme we also touch on several thrusts of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) which emphasise the need to take immediate action to combat climate change and its increasingly destructive effects on the earth.”

A donation of 20 boxes of food was also distributed to asnaf families who participated in the LIFE project.

After Selangor, the project will move on to Sabah on the 22 October 2021. The project will also cover sites in Perak, Pahang and Melaka.
