Eight companies have committed to an initial investment of RM116 million for 5G demonstration projects starting from October 2019 to March 2020.

Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) chairman Al-Ishsal Ishak said the companies were Altel Communications Sdn Bhd, Celcom Axiata Bhd, DiGi.Com Bhd, edotco Group Sdn Bhd, Maxis Bhd, Petronas, Telekom Malaysia Bhd and UMobile Sdn Bhd.

Speaking at a media briefing on the Malaysia Demonstration Projects (Oct 2019-Mar 2020) here today, he said they would demonstrate 5G use cases across nine verticals – agriculture; digital healthcare; education; entertainment and media; manufacturing and process industries; oil and gas; smart city; smart transportation and tourism.

“There will be 32 5G sites across six states – Kedah, Perak, Penang, Selangor, Terengganu and Kuala Lumpur which will go live for six months, with 55 5G use cases involving the nine verticals,” he said.

The use cases include Smart Traffic Lights, Smart Parking, Remote Diagnosis, Medical Tourism, Remote Medical Consultation, Smart Agriculture, Vehicle Tracking and 5G 360° Panoramic Live Video Surveillance.

Al-Ishsal said the 5G demonstration projects would focus on facilitating and cultivating the development of a holistic and inclusive 5G ecosystem in the country to stimulate demand and adoption of the technology for businesses and consumers.

“We hope to commercialise some of the use cases beginning the third quarter of 2020,” he added.

Al-Ishsal said the unwavering support and investment from the participating companies proved the industry’s commitment towards establishing a strong, viable use for 5G applications that would transform various industries as well as improve the living standards among Malaysians.

“MCMC hopes these use cases will attract more investments in the development of 5G in Malaysia, as well as proposals to enhance connectivity in the other states across the country,” he added.
